The Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge

December 14, 2015

YRows2Some facts about the challenge and wishing the Yorkshire Rows the very best of luck…

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is an international rowing race with 27 crews
from across the world taking part. The race starts on the 15th December from La Gomera
in the Canary Islands and finishes in Antigua. The 3000+ nautical miles could take between 40-90 days to cross.

  • Yorkshire Rows will be rowing 24/7 – 2 hours on and 2 hours off for 3000+ nautical miles.
  • They will row through some extreme weather including 30-40 ft waves, intense heat
    and more.
  • Will be eating specialised freeze dried adventure foods – as they will expend
approximately 7000-8000 calories a day they need to take in as many calories as they can.
  • Their toilet will be a bucket!
  • They will have to make all their own water by using a desalinator.
  • They are on our own, and can’t accept any help or supplies once they leave La Gomera. In emergency situations a rescue can be 2-3 days away.
  • They shall encounter whales, dolphins and sharks as well as other sea life, and also other vessels which can be small to very large!
  • All health issues have to be dealt with by themselves so they have to be trained and prepared for anything.
  • They have to be able to look after, fix and manage all our equipment.
