HR180 CSR: Big hearted Garforth business community supports LGI Cardiac Outpatients kids

February 3, 2017

In recognition of Wear Red in Feb, part of the international campaign to raise awareness of heart conditions, it was a good time to tell you more about how the team at HR180 Ltd asked our community of Garforth business people to help us raise money to buy a giant Connect 4-style game for children visiting the LGI Cardiac and Neuro Outpatients Department. Here’s how we got on.

The HR180 team donated homemade goodies for people in our neighbouring businesses to order and raise much needed cash for a local good cause.

We came up with the idea of a ‘Cake Away’ which took place in November to support LGI’s Cardiac and Neuro Outpatients Department paediatric waiting room which was undergoing refurbishment and desperately needed toys and play equipment to help kids get through difficult hospital visits.

With a challenging target of £150 to achieve the team put together an irresistible choice of cakes and sweets, with a raffle on the day for Leeds Rhinos Rugby League tickets and Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Union tickets and signed ball, and approached offices, warehouses and factories within a short distance from the HR180 office to tell them about the fundraiser and encourage orders. It was a major surprise when, well in advance of the day, the target had well and truly been smashed.

Claire Morley-Jones, MD of HR180 Ltd, says, “This is a cause close to HR180’s heart as our Finance Manager, Ange Britton, has family members affected by the heart condition Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Ange’s family has had amazing help and support from Dr Cowan, Kath Ashcroft and all the team at the LGI so asked us to help the refurbishment of the waiting room in the Outpatients Department, especially something teens would enjoy. We suggested the giant Connect 4-style game and the LGI were thrilled.”

With the final total achieved hitting over £785, the ward staff have been delighted to have the freedom to come up with a wish-list which HR180 is fulfilling during the early part of 2017.

Senior Sister Judith Shackleton says, “We cannot thank Claire, Ange and the team at HR180 enough for such a fantastic fundraising effort which has resulted in such a positive improvement to the paediatric waiting room within the Cardiac and Neuro Outpatients Department here at the LGI. The new toys have significantly improved the experience of the young patients that attend the department every day. We are extremely grateful and very humbled that people have so generously given their time, effort and funds to help us in this way.”

Claire concludes, “We were overwhelmed by the support from staff and managers from our neighbouring businesses who helped us raise over 5 times our original target – a huge HR180 thank you to all of them.”

The initiative also inspired a Leeds Investment firm Brewin Dolphin – with connections to Ange’s family – to present a cheque for £1100 to the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund which also supports the children’s waiting room.
