The start of the year is a perfect time to set our sights on the common goals that will drive our business success in the weeks and months ahead.
The importance of alignment in your business has never been more crucial given current global uncertainty. We're all trying so hard to do more with less, and as a result we can't afford to have our teams pulling in different directions.
When every single person understands the vision and is working towards the same goals they're far easier to achieve. Your business goals then become your North Star - the overarching aims that give you and your team direction.
In this article we take a look at objectives, KPI's and OKR's and why Claire recommends the latter!
Is your SME prepared for the future? Whatever that future might be?
Succession planning definitely isn't just for big corporations - it's actually more critical for small businesses who have less opportunity to bring in talent from the outside at short notice.
As you would expect, we've seen first hand how succession planning (done well and without any curve balls) can drive growth and ensure business continuity. In this article we examine why succession planning is imperative and how to go about preparing for it in your business.
Despite all the headlines in 2024 about the Employment Rights Bill, very little is expected to actually change Employment Legislation wise in 2025. Consultations are taking place, and will continue to do so throughout 2025, and we will keep you updated with any developments.
The key things to watch out for at the moment are the national minimum wage and statutory rate increases, which take effect from 1st April 2025.
There has been a lot of talk in the news about companies requiring employees who had previously worked remotely, to return back to the office on a full time or more frequent basis. Whilst we understand the benefits of employees being in the same building at the same time, this should be weighed up with the benefits that remote working can also bring.
This article explains what you need to consider from a contractual point of view, if you are considering amending your companies current working arrangements.

To breathe new life into your business culture, start by reassessing your company values to ensure that they align with your current business goals and employee expectations.
Encourage open communication and feedback at all levels. Implement regular team-building activities, both in-person and virtually, so that you can build those all important connections. Consider introducing mentor programmes or cross-team projects to break down silos. Recognise and reward behaviours that exemplify your desired culture.
Finally, lead by example – as a business owner, your actions and attitudes will set the tone for the entire business!
Annual leave requests can be tricky to manage, especially if you have smaller teams and a number of employees all wanting to book off similar times of the year. Whilst you might not be able to please everyone, every year, the fairest way to manage annual leave requests is by implementing a clear and fair holiday request system and policy.
Ensure that every employee knows what the request procedure is, when the next holiday year will become available to book, and what the policy rules are. Encourage employees to submit holiday requests as early as possible, and not to book their flights until their leave request has been approved! Using a HR Information System makes tracking and managing leave requests much easier, and easily accessible to all.
If you do tend to get a lot of requests for the same weeks of the year, consider other options to increase cover amongst the team, whilst maintaining minimum staffing levels. Cross-train employees to cover key roles, or consider flexible working arrangements or job sharing to accommodate more holiday requests.
