David Cameron outlines Apprenticeship overhaul

David Cameron will today unveil a raft of changes to apprenticeships, which includes a new policy of factoring in a business’ offering when awarding major government contracts.

The government will pledge to support three million apprenticeships by 2020, which includes the publication of new ‘industry standards’ designed to ensure that apprentices have the skills that companies need.

From 1 September 2015, all bids for government contracts worth more than £10m demonstrate a clear commitment to apprenticeships, under the new regulations. Businesses will be expected to demonstrate that they have a reasonable proportion of their workforce in an apprenticeship or formal training programme.

Additionally employers will be canvassed to for their views on a potential apprenticeship levy to be introduced in 2017, which and designed to increase investment in training and apprenticeships.

The Prime Minister said: “The greatest asset any employer has is their workforce. And by investing in them, they are investing in the success and future of their business.

“As a One Nation government, we are committed to supporting three million quality apprenticeships over the next five years – to help strengthen our economy, deliver the skills that employers need and give millions more hardworking people financial security and a brighter future.”
